Large Print Books at The Elephant’s Bookshop

All titles available on the Elephant’s Bookshop identified as large print books follow industry standards and have 16 or 18-point typefaces.

All of the Elephant’s books, including large print books, are prepared by human editors from the original texts. Contributing independent publishers do not produce, and the Elephant does not offer, computer-generated “blown-up” facsimile versions of old editions of classic books, which are commonly available elsewhere.

All of the Elephant’s large print book titles are unabridged and formatted by human editors as an original large print book edition, not a “bigger” version of a standard edition. When participating publishers produce both a standard version and a large print book edition of the same title, they are formatted separately. Pagination between the two versions will differ, as will the number of pages and, in many cases, the actual page size.

The most common page size for books available on The Elephant’s Bookshop site is 6″x9″, larger than the typical “trade” or “grocery store book rack” paperback size used for most mass-market paperbacks. Most such books use an 8- or 9-point type size, while most standard print books available at The Elephant’s Bookshop are formatted with 10- or 11-point fonts. This makes the books much easier on the eyes than “bargain priced” paperbacks.

Most of the large print books available there are printed on 7.44″x9.69″ size pages. This is a common size for hardcover books, and by using this slightly larger page size the large print books you see there can be made available at reasonable prices by reducing the number of pages.

All books available on The Elephant’s Bookshop, whether standard or large print books, are printed on heavyweight bright white paper with fully laminated covers featuring original full-color designs.
